Tirmizi + Campbell
New York City, NY
Asifa Tirmizi is a co-founding Partner of Tirmizi Campbell. She has over 12 years of experience working as a design lead on diverse project types, including both base building and interior design project types. Asifa provides the firm with an expressive aesthetic quality, and she has a strong background in interior design, exhibit design, and real estate development. She has taught an architecture studio and drawing classes at the Pratt Institute in Manhattan.
Asifa Tirmizi, principal and co-founder of New York City-based architecture and interior design firm Tirmizi Campbell, grew up drawing, sketching, and painting while admiring the work of her father, an architect in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. Throughout her middle and high school years, Tirmizi tagged along with her dad to job sites, getting a first-hand look at floor plans and construction. When it came time to choose a major, Tirmizi knew that she was destined to become an architect.
Tirmizi received her Bachelor of Fine Arts and Bachelor of Industrial Design from the University of Alberta in 1996 and then went on to earn a Master of Architecture from the Rhode Island School of Design. With an interest in real estate, Tirmizi went back to school in 2006 to receive a Master of Science in Real Estate Development from New York University.
When Tirmizi wasn’t hitting the books, she was traveling the world, exploring Rome, the Pantheon, and work by Calatrava.
Prior to starting her own firm in 2003, Tirmizi began her career at the Guggenheim Museum designing exhibits for Giorgio Armani and Frank Gehry, then teaching drawing and introduction to architecture classes at Pratt Institute in New York City. After joining local firm Pompei AD where she worked on large exhibit design projects and also retail stores such as Anthropologie and Urban Outfitters, Tirmizi transitioned to a larger firm, HLW. “I always knew that I wanted my own firm, but I knew that I had to get experience before I could start it,” said Tirmizi. After a brief stint at the NYC Department of City Planning after two years at HLW, Tirmizi along with former colleague Scot Campbell founded Tirmizi Campbell, a multi-disciplinary firm specializing in commercial, mixed-use, and residential projects. With a focus primarily on design, Tirmizi works on all project aspects from conception to completion including schematic design and development, specifications for finishes, fixtures, and furniture, and construction details.
Notable projects for the firm include the New York Headquarters of George Soros’s Open Society Foundations, Options Group, the Marilyn Agency, buildings including the Duane Street Residences and 24 West 23rd
Street, and residential spaces including those in The Albert building, on Central Park West, and on East 86th St.
Scot R. Campbell
Scot R. Campbell, AIA is a co-founding Partner of Tirmizi Campbell. He has over 14 years of experience in architecture, specializing in the planning, design, construction and administration of projects. Scot provides the firm with leadership and expertise throughout all phases of each project, managing the design team from conceptual design through construction completion.
He has extensive knowledge in both interiors and core & shell type projects. Scot is a registered Architect in New York State, is NCARB Certified, and is a member of the American Institute of Architects. Scot is also a visiting critic for an architecture studio at the New Jersey Institute of Technology School of Architecture.
After discovering a love for drafting and drawing back when he was a student at the University of Michigan, Scot Campbell, principal and co-founder of New York City-based architecture and interior design firm Tirmizi Campbell, followed the same advice he had given to others over the years: “enjoy what you do and be passionate about it.” With that drive(and an admiration for classic architecture), the Michigan native headed for New York City after graduating with a Master of Architecture degree and study abroad experiences in Copenhagen and Florence to begin his career in architecture. “I made the choice to study architecture at a young age, and I kept with it because I have found this field to be very inspiring and rewarding,” says Campbell.
In New York City, Campbell landed a position at Berzak Gold PC as a project manager for commercial interiors, and then moved on to Pompei A.D., a firm specializing in retail store and exhibit design. Although his next position at a local firm brought him high-end clientele and residential work, Campbell wanted to fulfill the dream he had back in high school: to start his own firm where he would create spaces and experiences for others to enjoy. In 2003, Campbell achieved that goal and started a firm with business partner Asifa Tirmizi that specialized in residential, commercial, and mixed-use design and architecture.
Campbell, who heads operations and project management work for the firm, sees the commercial and residential markets as challenging yet the most exciting. He brings great attention to detail, solution-oriented thinking, custom concept ideas, and a love for both the large and small scale work that the firm specializes in.
Notable projects for the firm include the New York Headquarters of George Soros’s Open Society Foundations, Options Group, the Marilyn Agency, buildings including the Duane Street Residences and 24 West 23rd Street, and residential spaces including those in The Albert building, on Central Park West, and on East 86th Street.
